In 2014, the College of Marin adopted its current naming standards. This document explains the inner workings of the automation that generates these names and indicates the rules and conventions used during such processes.
NAMES
Names and identification information are recorded as indicated on the community member’s government-issued documents. A member’s legal identification information is recorded and propagated through our systems and records. Recognizing that many community members use Preferred First Names other than their legal ones to identify themselves, the District has developed a name change process. We have aligned our naming standards with the recent AB2315 legislation requiring further integration of our community members’ affirmed preferred name and gender identification. Please visit the links below for detail information.
USERNAMES AND EMAILS
Usernames (MyCOM login name) are the primary identifier in all our internal systems. With the increased use of cloud applications, usernames are also the prevalent identifier for external applications. Emails are the usernames with a domain name appended. Our usernames are auto-generated during the onboarding process. Here are the rules and conventions built into our process:
For Employees (full time or part time)
The following usernames format are automatically assigned by order of availability.
-
[First Initial] [LastName] @marin.edu
-
[First Initial] [Middle Initial] [LastName] @marin.edu
-
[Two or three Initials FirstName] [LastName] @marin.edu
Example:
Name: John Doe Christopher
Note:
-
If a LastName has multiple parts, all parts are included in the username.
-
If a LastName has dashes or special characters, they are excluded in the username.
-
If a user is temporary worker (i.e. hourly), the domain is @mycom.marin.edu
For Students
Below is the student username format:
[First Initial] [LastName] [4 random digits] @mycom.marin.edu
Example:
Name: John Doe Christopher
For Students becoming Employees
Usernames are kept the same and the email domain is changed from @mycom.marin.edu to @marin.edu.
Example:
Name: John Doe Christopher
[email protected] changed to [email protected]
For Vendors
Vendors’ usernames are not automatically generated.
